The Storm Starts…
On April 23, 2010, a group of investors and game industry experts formed a new company to challenge the very way the gaming industry functions. Like any new business, we asked ourselves key questions… What is the gaming industry? Who are the fans? Where is the industry going? Where will it be in 5 years? In 10 years? When the children of the current fans grow up, what will they be playing? How do you get Mohawk-sporting creative geniuses and business suit-and-tie financial geniuses to speak the same language? How can you make awesome products and awesome profits?
What did we want Sandstorm to be?
We set out to answer these questions, and more.
We saw that across the industry, there are amazing games—board games, strategy games, educational games, roleplaying games, miniature games, and more—produced by small companies led by creative, passionate game designers. These companies often lacked a key ingredient in the success recipe… funding. Funding to employ the type of business people a company needs to be successful—finance and accounting, production, sales and marketing, human resources, legal—and funding to prepay authors, artists, and printers and manufactures. Shoe-string budgets don’t go far…
So, we decided what we wanted. We wanted to offer the business services that small game companies needed. Capitalization. Production management. Human Resources. Advertising. Sales.
And we wanted to do it right.
